Policy Address 2026 | Promoting the Popularization of Electric Vehicles: BYD’s Flash Charging Technology to be Introduced
Chief Executive John Lee delivered his new Policy Address today, stating that the government is vigorously promoting the popularization of electric vehicles. Currently, Hong Kong has over 180,000 electric vehicles, with more than 7 out of every 10 newly registered private cars being electric, placing Hong Kong among the fastest-growing regions globally.
The number of charging parking spaces in Hong Kong increased from approximately 28,000 in 2021 to over 170,000, while the number of public charging stations more than doubled from approximately 4,700 to approximately 17,300, supporting over 270,000 electric vehicles. The government will continue to use high-speed charging stations as the backbone of the public charging network, aiming to increase this number to 5,000 within five years, supporting an additional 250,000 electric vehicles.
The Policy Address also noted that Hong Kong’s innovative charging technologies are among the world’s leading, with megawatt-level flash charging technology capable of charging a private car in 9 minutes and battery swapping technology completing a full charge in approximately 100 seconds. With government support, related projects are expected to be implemented in Hong Kong in the near future.
