CityU’s “Smart Regulator” Helps Retired Vehicle Batteries “Resurrect”
The rapid popularization of electric vehicles in Hong Kong has created a burden on waste reduction due to the large number of retired batteries. A team from City University of Hong Kong received approximately HK$6.7 million in funding from the Low Carbon Green Research Fund under the Environment and Ecology Bureau to develop a smart power regulator, enabling retired electric vehicle batteries to be reused and their surplus electricity applied to general power uses. With the support of the fund, the team successfully established a complete technical framework, including battery collection, screening, testing, system design and integration, and applied it to solar energy storage systems. This work has standardized and replicated the technology, and collaboration with industry partners has laid the foundation for subsequent commercialization and market implementation.
