HK Business Observation | Mainland New Energy Vehicles Dominate Sales Charts; Hong Kong Automotive Expo Boosts Overseas Expansion
In recent years, new energy vehicles (NEVs) have become the main force driving mainland Chinese companies’ overseas expansion. In the Hong Kong market, NEVs have finally broken through the encirclement after years of fierce competition. According to the latest data from the Transport Department, in May, mainland brands occupied 8 of the top 10 spots in the Hong Kong new car registration rankings, strongly replacing the traditional dominance of German and Japanese brands. While Tesla maintained its leading position with 1,392 vehicles, BYD (806 vehicles) and Denza (649 vehicles) followed closely behind, with the two BYD brands combined surpassing Tesla.
The “2026 Automotive International Expo (Hong Kong),” to be held on the 18th June , will also witness a historic moment for mainland new energy vehicle brands, wielding the trump cards of “price war” and “value war,” as they conquer the global market. The exhibition brings together numerous mainland automakers such as Geely, GAC, BYD, XPeng, and Jike, focusing on cutting-edge electrification and intelligent technologies and global overseas cooperation, generating high expectations in the market.
