Subsidizing Electric Taxi Replacement | Only 40% of Car Owners Participate; Xie Zhanhuan: Economic Changes Make Car Replacement More Cautious
To support Hong Kong’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, the government launched an electric taxi subsidy scheme in December 2024. Secretary for the Environment and Ecology, Tse Chin-wan, responded to a Legislative Council inquiry on Wednesday (October 7) that as of August this year, approximately 40% of the invited taxi owners, representing 3,578 taxi owners, accepted the subsidy quota. Of these, 1,152 electric taxis have already obtained licenses and are eligible for the subsidy. Regarding owners who refused to participate in the scheme or did not respond within the deadline, Tse Chin-wan indicated that some owners were more cautious due to changes in the economic environment in recent years.
