John Tsang recalls Musk’s visit to Curious Tesla’s best-selling products; Tax incentives contribute to the popularization of electric vehicles in Hong Kong
The “one-for-one” tax incentive scheme for electric vehicles ended in April this year. Former Financial Secretary John Tsang, who introduced the first-time registration tax exemption for electric vehicles, recalled on September 27th that in 2016, the year before he left the government, the number of electric vehicles in Hong Kong was only slightly over 7,000. This year, it has surged to 180,000, a 25-fold increase in ten years. He also posted a photo of Elon Musk, then CEO of Tesla, visiting him in Hong Kong, noting that Hong Kong was once Tesla’s highest-selling region globally, and Musk was curious about why sales were so high there. Looking ahead, he believes Hong Kong’s power grid is beginning to fail to meet the growing charging demand, especially for super-fast chargers, which he believes will be crucial infrastructure for the further development of electric vehicles.
