Secretary for the Environment and Ecology, Tse Chin-wan, expressed confidence in promoting the adoption of electric vehicles; new energy minibuses may be available early next year.

At a briefing to the Environmental Advisory Committee on the Five-Year Plan and Policy Address, Tse expressed confidence in promoting the adoption of electric vehicles.

Tse mentioned that Hong Kong’s first Five-Year Plan targets environmental protection and green transformation, proposing four binding environmental indicators and several specific measures, aiming to cease new registrations of, including hybrid and gasoline-powered private cars, by 2035.

Regarding concerns raised by committee members about whether subsidies would be provided for the transport industry to switch to heavy-duty electric vehicles, Tse stated that the development of heavy-duty vehicles is not yet mature, and some models are not suitable for development in Hong Kong. He emphasized that government subsidies are not a long-term strategy, and the authorities have established a working group to communicate with vehicle manufacturers to produce more models suitable for Hong Kong use and accelerate the electrification of commercial vehicles. He also predicted good news regarding new energy minibuses early next year.
