The first large-scale EV battery recycling facility put into operation in June; legislators propose cooperation with mainland China to transform waste into resources.

The first large-scale EV battery recycling facility opened this month. Some Legislative Council members believe that long-term cooperation with mainland China should be explored to recycle waste batteries.

The government is actively promoting new energy vehicles, and the batteries of electric vehicles launched in earlier years are gradually reaching the end of their service life. In a written response to Legislative Council members’ inquiries, the government stated that based on the initial registration figures for electric vehicles, the amount of retired batteries will increase from approximately 1,300 metric tons this year to approximately 6,700 metric tons by 2030. These retired batteries cannot be disposed of directly but must be sent to licensed facilities; however, in the past three years, only about 130 metric tons have been processed.
