Chen Qingquan: My Magical Connection with Cambridge
In 1937, I was born in the western suburbs of Magirang, Central Java, Indonesia. There, I was surrounded by Indonesia’s renowned military academy and a foreign community, so I was immersed in various cultures from a young age. My father ran a taxi and bus company, and his English tutor was German. I was studying at the Dutch-Chinese School at the time — Indonesia was a Dutch colony, and the Dutch-Chinese School was a Chinese school where instruction was in Dutch. Interestingly, my Chinese teacher was Dutch; he was a graduate of the Chinese Department at Leiden University (renowned for its Department of Oriental Languages). My German and Dutch teachers often told me mysterious stories about Cambridge and Cambridge University, so I longed for that ancient city from a young age.
