Recently, two incidents related to electric vehicles have drawn widespread attention: the controversy surrounding the procurement of charging stations at the Lohas Park Resort in Tseung Kwan O, despite government subsidies; and Financial Secretary Paul Chan’s sweeping termination of the “one-for-one” subsidy for electric vehicles in the 2026-27 Budget, citing the maturity of the electric vehicle market. Public funds require prudent usage, as promoting electric vehicles cannot rely solely on subsidies; the government’s role should indeed focus on promoting marketization in order to achieve international carbon neutrality goals.
